Autumn Colours: Running Ontario’s Credit River Valley
With Fall Colours in the Greater Toronto Area likely amping up to full volume this weekend, it will be a great opportunity to take a break from the inanimate grey surroundings of our cities and investigate Mother Nature’s brilliance. Shooting through the rolling hills of the Credit River valley, here are three route suggestions presenting the best of the season, combining sinuous drives, scenic hiking, spectacular art and not to mention a bevy of markets, dining and shopping options. The day trips will leave your mind, body and soul refreshed and ready for the onslaught of a not-too-distant winter. Get out and enjoy (in our opinion) Ontario’s best season!
Day Trip #4 – Texas’ Devil’s Backbone

The venerable Hill Country motorcycle route, the Devil’s Backbone, links Fredericksburg and Wimberley through ruggedly beautiful Central Texas, just southwest of Austin. Today, we follow the tracks of our biking brethren and discover the rutted landscapes around 1/4 of its length between Canyon Lake and the eastern extreme of the Texas Wine Trail near Driftwood. With sprawling canyonland views sloping to either side of the ridge-running road and plenty of places to stop and enjoy the agreeable Spring temperatures, shooting up the Devil’s Backbone makes for a great day of scenic driving and exploration.
Day Trip #3 – Beaver Valley’s Autumn Splendor
Beaver Valley is considered by many to be the prettiest of Ontario’s river valleys. County Road 13, as it snakes its way from Kimberley to Thornbury through quilted farmland and across rushing rivers, teasingly unveils autumn in all its glory. Hikes to the edge of the UNESCO World Biosphere-designated Niagara Escarpment yield breath-taking vistas of village and agricultural life in the valley 150 m below. With picturesque views, rugged history and small-town charm combined, classic autumn road trips start in the Beaver Valley.
Day Trip #2: Nuit Blanche – Transforming Toronto
Nuit Blanche might be one of Toronto’s most unpredictable and consequently most compelling events. Advertized as ‘artists transforming Toronto’, this surreal and often cerebral celebration attracts hundreds of thousands into Toronto’s heart to explore a world imagined by our City’s most creative.
