Across Ontario: Games, Movies and Parlours

A lively sampling of events, destinations and activities around the province from November 9-22, 2009.

#1 EVENT: World Rock-Paper-Scissors Championship | Toronto, ON | November 14, 2009 | $15-25

Before you laugh, this championship is serious business. $10, 000 in prize money is on the line for the winners of this “dance of the hands”. Attracting 500 competitors from around the globe including national champions from 3 continents, the World RPS Championship is a game of strategy (yes, strategies exist) and intimidation through costume. Think you have what it takes to be a champion? Enter the competition for only $25 or just watch the mayhem unfold at the Steam Whistle Brewery for $15.

#2 EVENT: Real Life Game of Clue | Toronto, ON | November 14, 2009 @ 3pm | Free

Join Improv in Toronto for a rendition of the classic board game brought to life in one of Toronto’s shopping Meccas: The Eaton Centre. This is ‘urban-gaming’ at its finest as you collect clues from all the regular cast of characters - Col. Mustard, Mrs. Peacock, Prof. Plum and others – as they roam the mall. Solve who murdered Mr. Boddy and you could be in line for prizes.

#3 EVENT: Victorian Parlour Theatre | Hamilton, ON | November 15, 2009 | $20

This unique theatre experience allows you to get an up-close view of the production. Hosted by Haunted Hamilton in the truly impressive and historic mansion of the Scottish Rite of Freemasonry, the parlour theatre brings back the art of great ghost storytelling around the fireplace by accomplished actors in full costume. Ticket reservations recommended.

#4 EVENT: Subterranean Cinema @ The Diefenbunker | Carp, ON | November 17, 2009 | $6-15

Outside Ottawa, near the sleepy town of Carp lies one of Canada’s best kept secrets. Built in the late 1950s to protect Canada’s governing elite in the case of nuclear assault during the Cold War, the massive ‘Diefenbunker’ looms 4 storeys underground. In 1998, like so many Cold War relics, the Diefenbunker was converted into a museum and is now a National Historic Site. There may be no more eerie way to watch a Cold War era movie than underground in the stronghold’s Subterranean Cinema. Fittingly, on November 17th The Manchurian Candidate will be screened with admission of $6 (free popcorn!). Combine this with a mini bunker tour for $15.

#4 EVENT: Leonid Meteor Shower | Everywhere, ON | November 17, 2009 | Free

According to Wikipedia, the Leonids are a prolific meteor shower associated with the comet Tempel-Tuttle. The showers are expected to occur from November 10-21 with the peak of 500 meteors/hour predicted to occur in the evening of November 17 – just short of the 1000 requirement to be classified a meteor storm. Pray for clear skies and dust off that telescope for some great views.

#5 EVENT: Light Art Food | Toronto, ON | November 21, 2009 | Free

47 artists, 23 restaurateurs and numerous other retailers from Bloordale Village have collaborated to set their neighbourhood streetscape alight with this fun and colourful event. Combining artistic storefront “nightlight” installations with a street festival atmosphere, Bloor Street, between Dufferin and Lansdowne, will be turned into a late autumn “walking destination.”  Affordable tasting menus, free music and performance art are featured at various locations throughout the area.

DESTINATION: Rink at the Brink | Niagara Falls, ON | $8

With lofty company like Rockefeller Plaza or the Rideau Canal, Rink at the Brink is being classified as one of the most picturesque ice skating destinations in the world because of its majestic views of Horseshoe Falls. This new Niagara Falls attraction is being launched in conjunction with the Winter Festival of Lights and is situated adjacent to the Table Rock Centre, providing great sightlines to both American and Canadian falls, the nightly illumination/light show and weekly fireworks displays that are hosted as part of the Festival. The Festival runs through January 4, while the Rink is open November 23, 2009 through February 28, 2010. Admission is $8 or $10 with skate rental.
